"Socializing" is such a broad term, with such a wide range of possible meanings. Most commonly, when I use the word "socialize" I think of family gatherings where we all get together and interact. This is an important part of our everyday lives, but sometimes people get too caught up in this "life experience" and lose sight of the real world. What I'm talking about is when you have your typical "bad day." Instead of socializing in a traditional setting with like-minded people, you go online to the Internet and spend your time alone or with people you don't really know that well.
Many times, this can lead to awkward situations, especially when a person has very little social skills. When I see people who are successful at online dating vs traditional dating and they're both spending a lot of time on social media sites, I tend to ask myself why they're doing this. It makes no sense. Why spend so much time "surfing the web" if you already find someone you "click with?" There's something else that I think people don't realize about social media and online dating.
You see, even though you socialize on the Internet you're not actually interacting with people. In fact, most social networks are just a bunch of pictures and personal profiles. That's a lot of "you" and "you're" and not a whole lot of "us." In order to meet someone and develop relationships you have to find them, and that's not always as easy as typing in your favorite search engine.
The other thing is, most traditional dating venues are rather impersonal places. It's fine to go to bars and clubs and have fun, but it's also nice to spend time at home with your family and doing what you do best. Socializing is a very personal activity, so why would you want to go to a restaurant or a bar where all you'll be able to talk about is your meal? You don't, and that's why traditional dating has been sort of hit or miss.
With online social networking, you can be whoever you are, and you can be someone who's interested in someone else. It allows you to broaden your horizons and meet new people. It's not like you're going to have to learn an entire new set of social skills, because it's all about putting yourself out there in a new way. This is a great way to meet someone new, whether they're someone you've met online or someone you've met in real life.
The point of this is, when it comes to socializing, you have to be yourself. If you're insecure and worried about socializing online, that's your problem. Don't worry about what other people think or say about you. If you make a mistake, move on. The only time you should worry about whether or not you look "likes" is when you're trying to get into a real social situation with someone in person. In general, online dating is the perfect way to improve your social life, whether you're shy and introverted or not.
