It is amazing all the lies people tell themselves. There are absolute liars and then there are the decent people who just need to have their facts straight. It is amazing all the lies people tell themselves about everything - especially if they never seem to think it is happening to them. In this article we will take a look at why people lie, and how you can tell when someone is lying to you.
One of the first things to understand about why people lie is that it is usually an attempt to cover up the truth. If a person is lying then they have to cover up what they are doing, and often they will tell you something that doesn't actually make sense. This is why it is so common to hear a person say something like; I can't remember what I told you last time, or I didn't mean it like that - I promise I won't do it again!
However the truth is that the person actually did mean what they said, and it just slipped their mind. When a person says; I can't remember what I told you last time, and they are actually telling you the truth - they are lying. However the opposite is true too. If a person is saying; I can remember what I told you yesterday, but I am unsure of the details, they are probably remembering correctly.
It is also very common for people to say; I can't remember who I talked to last week. They may well have talked to that same person a few days before, but they just don't remember the details. They also might not remember who they were talking to last week either. However that person might not be remembering anything at all. They may simply be trying to place the conversation in its proper context. And they might have been making mistakes all along too!
A third example that often comes up in my classes is where a person has completely unrelated ideas - and they can't pin it down to anyone or anything. This happens quite often. However a person can often become extremely defensive and reluctant to admit any wrongdoing at all. This is because they still haven't fully come to grips with what they have actually done - even though to themselves they know it is wrong.
There are many more examples of people lying all the time. The important thing is not to point the finger of blame at them. Instead focus on understanding the reasons why they are doing it. It could be that they are hiding a little bit, or they are unsure of how to handle certain situations. In order to help them through this they can be taught how to control their breathing.
